Masks

Life is a masquerade; a sea of false facades.
The self hidden behind layers upon layers
Of masks. So much so, that when you look
In the mirror, you can’t even see who you are
Let alone distinguish the mask from the flesh.
Excruciating pain awaits those who dare rip
The masks of their faces.
A bloody mess of papier-mâché and flesh;
A deformed crimson face lies underneath. Thus
New masks are formed when we seek to remove
All other masks. True beauty lies only in belief.

  1. Good job! This one’s so wonderful…
    I love these lines:

    Thus
    New masks are formed when we seek to remove
    All other masks.

    True. So true.

  2. Mmm this is so dark! Yes, we all wear masks of some sort, but who is to say that beneath it/them is a deformed, crimson face? Sure, physically, if we were to remove the skin…but what of the spirit beneath?

A Penny for your thoughts. Speak your mind.
